The 2017 campaign came to an end for the Golden Knights softball team here Friday with a doubleheader loss against Georgia Highlands.

In Game One, WGTC fell behind early and trailed 5-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Golden Knights came storming back, scoring five runs to take a 6-5 lead over one of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s (GCAA) top teams.

The Chargers were able to come up with a two-out, two-strike single in the top of the seventh inning, knotting the game at 6-6. Georgia Highlands got the go-ahead run in the eighth and held on for the 7-6 victory.

In Game two, the Golden Knights could not get anything going offensively and dropped an 8-1 decision to the Chargers. The Chargers improved to an eye-popping 40-12 on the year, 19-9 in GCAA action.

After not fielding a team in 2016, WGTC closes the season 9-27, 5-23 in the GCAA. Coach Monica Mills’ club showed marked improvement as the season went along. Of the 13 players on this year’s roster, 11 were freshmen, and the experience gained will provide the foundation looking ahead to the 2018 season.
