To kick off the 2017-2018 school year, the University of West Georgia’s Theatre Company will present Godspell Sept. 27-Oct. 1. A classic, family musical, Godspell was written by John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz and was produced on Broadway in 1971.

The musical creatively showcases Biblical parables and the teachings of Jesus with music from all genres that will make you want to get out of your seat and rock out with the cast.

It expresses the upbeat message of Jesus’ teachings of love, faith and tolerance through classic songs such as “Day by Day,” “Learn Your Lessons Well” and “Light of the World.” The musical also explores the path of Judas’ inner struggle of whether or not to betray Jesus.

The catchy tunes that come along with this family oriented musical are also accompanied by the sharp, explosive moments of action that may leave you on the edge of your seat. Although many are familiar with the Gospel, the ending of Godspell will leave viewers wondering whether or not Jesus will be resurrected.

Director Amy Cuomo is giving the audience a more modernized rendition of this classic musical, allowing them to gain a new perspective. There is a broad assortment of players from last season’s performances as well as several new performers to the UWG Theatre Company.
