Carolyn Audrey Duke Pruitt

Carolyn Audrey Duke Pruitt of Carrollton passed away Monday, October 16, 2017 in a local hospital. She was born in Newnan, October 3, 1939, daughter of the late Grover W. Duke and Gladys M. Cater Duke. Mrs. Pruitt was a member of the Freedom Missionary Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Sewell Manufacturing Company.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Faye Duke and Dorothy Waddell; two brothers, Harvey Duke and Arvel Duke.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Pruitt of Carrollton; daughters, Kathy and Rockey Reed of Temple, Kristie Kennedy of Bremen; grandchildren, Ashley Teague of Temple, Jeffery Reed of Temple; sisters, Bessie Blue of Buchanan, Hazel Sullivan of Temple, Clovis Benton of Alabama and brother Doyle and Diane Duke of Bremen.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.

Barbara Nell Cox Phillips

Barbara Nell Cox Phillips, age 72 of Carrollton, passed away Monday, October 16, 2017. She was born July 11, 1945 in Cleburne County, Alabama to the late Melford Cox and Jessie Weaver Cox. She was a homemaker and Baptist by faith.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Helen Denney; and three brothers, Lee Cox, Joe Cox, and Hugh Cox.

Jay Franklin Gurley

Jay Franklin Gurley, age 37 of Carrollton, Georgia passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017.

Jay was born in East Point, Georgia on March 9, 1980, the son of Jimmy Franklin Gurley and Bonnie Edmondson Gurley. He was the team leader for the maintenance technicians at Decostar Industries and was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church in Rockmart, Georgia. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, kayaking, playing the guitar and spending time with his family.

Robert James Baird

Robert James Baird, age 80, of Douglasville passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017. He was born on August 27, 1937 in St. Paul, Minnesota to the late Russell David Baird and the late Teresa Robertson Baird.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War era and he was a retired project manager with Kawneer Architectural Engineering. After retirement he worked as a parking control officer with the City of Douglasville. He was a member of Douglasville First Presbyterian Church.

Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor Carol Stanley Baird; daughter, Susan Baird Clay and her husband Robert; grandchildren, Maegan and Alyssa Clay; brother, David Baird and his wife Karen; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Christopher Baird; sister, Jane Baird Beeley.

Ernest R. Head

Ernest R. Head, age 68 of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Tanner Medical Center Carrollton.  He was born January 11, 1949 in Hoechst, Germany, the son of the Mrs. Antonia Dirnfellner and the late Ernest Eugene Head. 

Mr. Head received his Masters Degree from the University of Georgia and was employed for thirty years with the West Georgia Technical College, having served in Marketing and Management, and later in Administration.  He was a member of 1st Christian Church in Carrollton. 

Survivors include his wife Deborah Sue Shipley Head; mother, Antonia Head; daughters and son-in-law, Kristina & Roland Smith of Ooltewah, TN and Angela Coxey of Grand Junction, CO; and brother and sister-in-law, Marvin & Terrie Head of Douglasville, GA.

Juanita Shirey Watson

Juanita Shirey Watson, age 83 of Carrollton passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017. She was born July 9, 1934 in Gadsden, Alabama to the late Waymon Austin Shirey and Meggie Mae Harris Shirey. She retired from Dollar General where she had worked for more than 10 years.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Talmadge Watson; daughter, Tammy Phillips; son, Kenneth Watson; and brother, William Austin Shirey.

Survivors include her children, Carlos Watson, Waymon I. Watson, Rodney Watson, Leslie Watson, Quenton D. Watson, and Melinda Baxter; sisters, Barbara Jacobs, and Linda Little; brothers, Jimmy Shirey and Clyde Shirey; a number of grandchildren and  great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 2:00 PM from Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Layton, Rev. Chester Presnal, and J. W. Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Yolanda Sampson

Yolanda Sampson, age 82 of Carrollton, Georgia passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Mario Lopez officiating.

Interment will be in OLPH Catholic Church Cemetery.

Almon Funeral Home of Carrollton has charge of arrangements.

Mariko “Penny” Patterson

Mariko “Penny” Patterson, age 86 of Evans, Georgia passed away October 06, 2017. She was born September 10, 1931 in Beppu, Japan to the late Toshiro Hayashi and Kiyo Hayashi. She retired from the Richmond County School System after working for more than 25 years in dietary and was a member of Warren Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Patterson.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ray Rivera of Evans, GA; special niece, Kelly Collins of Carrollton; sister and brother-in-law, Toshiko and Kozi Nakazawa of Japan; and two grandchildren, Frankie Lane and Andrew (Lindsey)  Lewis.

Funeral service will be conducted Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 4:00 PM from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Mr. Frankie Lane officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until the hour of service.

Reba Sue Ward Wilburn

Reba Sue Ward Wilburn, age 71 of Carrollton, passed away Friday, October 6, 2017. She was born April 20, 1946 in Carrollton, Georgia to the late Oscar Ward Sr., and Ollie Mae Brooks Ward.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Ernest Wilburn; daughter, Wanda Swafford; brothers, Harold Ward, Jack Ward, Billy Ward, Bobby Ward, Edward Ward and Oscar Ward, Jr.; and sister, Martha Jean Haney.

Survivors include her son, Harvey “Bo” Wilburn of Carrollton; sisters, Shirley Collins and Mary Lands; brother, Robert Ward; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted Monday, October 9, 2017 at 1:00 PM from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel. Interment will follow in Carroll Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM until the hour of service.
